Try an embroidery outline on a scrap

A small experiment is enough to explore thread, fabric and a favourite colour.

Choose a friendly first sample

DMC’s preparation guidance discusses cotton or linen and cautions that stretch fabric may need stabilising. Follow the fabric’s washing and ironing instructions and prepare a trial piece. Leave enough fabric around the intended outline for your chosen support.

Plan the outline

Begin with a simple line you can follow. Trace your own sketch or one of our personal-use motifs using a method compatible with the fabric. Test the marker and its removal on a scrap before transferring the final design.

Practise before the full motif

Choose a stitch from a reliable illustrated lesson and try a short section. DMC links beginner lessons for common stitches. Record the thread, strands and needle you used so a result you like can be repeated.

Keep the experiment small

A sample can teach you about spacing and colour without becoming a finished gift. Keep it in your project record with a few observations. Our sampler supplies original outlines and recording sheets, rather than a stitch-by-stitch chart.
