Give a handmade gift a clear brief

Start with the person and the purpose, then choose a small project.

Ask what it needs to do

A decorative card, bookmark and stitched picture solve different gift briefs. Think about the recipient’s style, available space and whether they want a practical or decorative object. Keep the first project small enough to finish comfortably.

Keep materials and use aligned

Choose supplies for the intended purpose and retain care information. A decorative craft item should be described that way. Avoid adding loose button decorations to items intended for young children or pets.

Plan the presentation

Decide how the finished work will be protected in a bag, envelope or parcel. A note describing the materials and care can be useful. Avoid inventing washing instructions if you do not have guidance for the components.
